Liverpool ‘united as one’ after Mohamed Salah return, says Virgil van Dijk

Captain Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool “We are absolutely united and will move forward as one” after Mohamed Salah’s return to the team Win against Brighton on Saturday.

Salah came off the bench for the first time at Liverpool after claiming he was “thrown under the bus” by the club following last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Leeds.

The 33-year-old was left out of the midweek Champions League win at Inter Milan, but returned for the Brighton game after talks with manager Arne Slot and provided an assist in the 2-0 win.

Salah will join the Egyptian national team at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on Monday and could miss eight Liverpool games if his country reaches the final on January 18.

Van Dijk, who played his 250th Premier League match for Liverpool on Saturday, said, “This week we have definitely shown that we are united. We are moving forward as a unit.”

“Mo is going to Afcon and we all hope he will do well there and come back and be important for us for the rest of the season.

“The other side is that we all know football and we have no idea what will happen. I hope he stays because he is one of my leaders and he is still very important for the football club. But there is more to this situation.”
