Mike Johnson Panics After Trump Official Calls Out GOP on Shutdown
When it comes to the reality of the government shutdown, at least one Trump administration official can see the forest for the trees.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins upset Republican leadership Friday by sending a rare, level-headed message to Americans whose SNAP benefits are expiring.
“My message to America is, first of all, your government has failed you,” Rollins said. said reporters. “Poverty isn’t red or blue, it’s not a Democrat or Republican issue. It doesn’t matter who you vote for or whether you vote at all. If you’re in a position where you can’t feed your family and are relying on the $187 a month for the average family in the SNAP program, we’ve failed you.”
But it was a politically unpalatable call for House Speaker Mike Johnson, who immediately went into recovery mode and tried to twist Rollins’ remarks to fit the party message.
“And it became clear that when he said ‘We failed you,’ he meant ‘We Democrats,’ okay?” johnson in question.
Rollins is no stranger to the conservative message; has run conservative think tanks for decades. Following Johnson’s quick return, he continued to refuse to commit to releasing SNAP funds if a judge ordered him to do so.
“We are looking at all options” said reporters.
The government remained closed for more than 30 days starting Friday, making it the second-longest federal shutdown in U.S. history. This was only overcome by a 35-day shutdown that occurred between 2018 and 2019 during Donald Trump’s first term.
After weeks Blames Democrats singularly for stalemateTrump late Thursday ordered Republicans to “INSTALL THE NUCLEAR OPTION” by eliminating the filibuster in the Senate. The directive puts enormous pressure on Republicans, who have long struggled to maintain the filibuster that gives the Senate minority tremendous power as leverage during Democrats’ legislative insurgency.
Meanwhile, thousands of federal workers have worked without pay for weeks, Affordable Care Act marketplace credits have expired in many states, and nearly 42 million Americans are set to go hungry when SNAP benefits expire on Saturday.
