Mike Johnson touts ‘no tax on tips’ deduction for workers ahead of Tax Day

Ahead of Tax Day, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is highlighting a new tax cut Republicans enacted last year that boosted the take-home pay of millions of Americans.

Bob Mitchell, an Uber driver from South Florida, recently gave Johnson a first-hand account detailing how his “no tax on tips” discount allowed him to claim a 20% larger refund compared to last year, according to a video obtained by Fox News Digital.

“I usually get a great response back. And I’m shocked. Even my accountant is shocked,” Mitchell told Johnson after delivering the Uber Eats order to his office.

“This will make a big difference,” he continued, adding that the new deduction will put more money in his pocket to manage expenses such as his children’s school fees.

The new deduction was among a series of tax benefits enacted by President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill in July 2025. Every Democratic lawmaker voted against the measure, citing the law’s reforms to Medicaid and food assistance programs.

Republicans specifically made the tax deduction retroactive, allowing tipped workers to claim the deduction for the 2025 calendar year.

Under the legislation, qualified tip recipients would be able to deduct up to $25,000 annually through 2028. This deduction will phase out for individuals earning over $150,000 and married couples earning over $300,000.

In the video, Johnson called the “no tax on tips” cut one of the “greatest achievements” so far in Trump’s second term.

“We wrote tax cuts for working families for lower and middle class income earners; that’s where I come from, they are our people,” the speaker said. “And that will benefit people.”

Stories like Mitchell’s are what Republicans hope will add a human face to their tax-cut efforts ahead of November’s midterm elections.

President Trump first implemented a tax cut for tipped workers while on the campaign trail in 2024.

Republicans are also highlighting new tax breaks for overtime and senior citizens as part of their message on the economy.

About 45 percent of tax filers claimed at least one cut from Republicans through the 2025 tax and spending cuts bill, according to the Treasury Department.

Despite the popularity of the “no tax on tips” deduction, several Democratic-led states have refused to implement the tax code change, citing its effects on revenue. Republicans passed a bill in February that would override the D.C. City Council ordinance. blocked new tax cuts It will go into effect for tipped workers and those who work overtime.
