Indonesia volcano erupts, alert level raised to highest

Indonesia’s Semeru volcano has erupted and the country’s volcanology agency has raised the alert level to the highest for Java Island’s tallest mountain.

The volcano spewed ash clouds up to 2 km above the mountain’s summit, the agency said, adding that residents should stay 2.5 km away due to risks.

With an altitude exceeding 3600 meters, Semeru is one of Indonesia’s 129 active volcanoes.

Java is Indonesia’s most densely populated island.

The Indonesian Geological Agency said the day’s eruption covered many villages with ash and forced authorities to raise the volcano’s alert level twice, from the third-highest level to the highest.

No casualties were reported.
