Mexico vs England: England’s Quansah set to start at right-back

Spence started England’s goalless group stage draw against Ghana as a left-back and came on as a substitute in the victories over Croatia and Panama.

Right-back Reece James missed the last two matches due to an injury against Ghana.

The 26-year-old has yet to fully train with the team since his injury and was the only player absent from Mexico City on Saturday.

The Football Association told BBC Sport James was following his own individual program away from the training ground.

Tuchel also told the media on Saturday that the Chelsea captain will need a late assessment before deciding whether he is fit enough to be on the bench against Mexico.

Following Quansah’s injury, the German player admitted that he was worried about England’s right-back crisis before the match against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Newcastle right-back Tino Livramento had to leave the squad with a calf problem before the start of the World Cup campaign, with Tuchel opting to call up Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah rather than a right-back such as Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Another option for Tuchel at right-back is Ezri Konsa, who has started all four of England’s matches as a centre-back so far.

More to follow.
