Minneapolis mayor says ICE’s unconstitutional conduct met with peaceful protests

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey insisted that protests in the city remained “peaceful” following the fatal shooting of Renee Good during an exclusive interview with “Fox & Friends”

“We saw maybe tens of thousands of people protesting peacefully in the street,” Frey said in an interview set to air Wednesday on “Fox & Friends.” “And at the same time, yes, they will stand up for their neighbors.”

The mayor addressed the impact of the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer.

Good was shot and killed during an interaction with an ICE officer last Wednesday. Since then, protests have broken out in Minneapolis and across the country. Local officials like Frey criticized the officer’s actions. Meanwhile, federal officials, including members of the Trump administration, have stood firmly behind ICE, saying the agent acted in self-defense and labeling Good’s actions leading to the shooting “an act of domestic terrorism.” Many Democrats rejected the claim of self-defense.

Mayor Frey said he does not support abolishing ICE, despite Minnesota filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the increase in immigration enforcement operations.

“I do not support abolishing ICE,” Frey said. “But I am absolutely opposed to this administration acting with us.”

Although there have been previous ICE operations in Minneapolis, the current influx of federal agents is overwhelming, especially compared to the city’s relatively small police force, Frey said.

“There are currently approximately 3,000 federal ICE agents in our city between ICE and border control,” Frey explained. “Do you know how many police officers we have? 600.”

“The type of pressure our city is experiencing because of this is increasing,” he added.

The mayor accused ICE of “unconstitutional behavior” and faulted the Trump administration for what he described as aggressive immigration enforcement tactics.

“ICE is not new, our segregation ordinance in the city is not new,” Frey said. “ICE has been around for decades, and so has our separation ordinance. What’s new? What’s new is the way the Trump administration is governing itself now.”
