Mugshots of prisoners who stabbed child-killer to death and tucked him in for the night | UK | News

Three convicted murderers who stabbed child murderer Kyle Bevan to death in his cell at high-security HMP Wakefield, then laid him in bed and left him to bleed to death have been jailed for life. Mark Fellows, 45, Lee Newell, 57, and David Taylor, 64, carried out the murder in a West Yorkshire prison in November 2025.
Bevan, 33, was serving a minimum 28-year prison sentence for the murder of his partner’s two-year-old daughter Lola James in Haverfordwest in 2020. Mugshots released by police show the brutal faces of the trio: Fellows, a gang hitman known as “Wakefield Dexter”; Newell, who was previously killed in prison and was missing one eye; and Taylor, a violent offender from Oak Avenue, County Durham, born April 26, 1962.
Mrs Justice McGowan handed down “new and separate” life sentences at Leeds Crown Court on Friday to Fellows and Newell, who were already serving such sentences. Taylor was given a life sentence for the murder of Bevan, along with the murder of 24-year-old Alisha Apostoloff-Boyarin and the attempted murder of a GMP detective.
The judge noted that he “never had to punish anyone for a third murder” in the case of the two defendants.
Taylor was being held for the murder of defenseless Alisha Apostoloff-Boyarin when he took part in the attack on Bevan. Alisha was reported missing from Ashton-under-Lyne on February 2, 2022, after her grandmother raised her concerns. He met Taylor through a mutual friend in late 2021.
He was last seen traveling with Taylor in a Volkswagen Passat. The couple had traveled between Manchester and Durham, staying at Chapel-en-le-Frith campsite. She was last seen with him on January 22, 2022. His body was never found.
Taylor initially denied murder, but pleaded guilty in February 2026. Greater Manchester Police continues to appeal for information to find his remains.
While detained at HMP Frankland in July 2024, Taylor requested a meeting with GMP officers, claiming he had new information about Alisha’s whereabouts. During the interview, after a pause, he attacked them with a makeshift handle. Detective Constable Darren Bratby was seriously injured, the knife narrowly missing his heart. Both officers fought Taylor off before jail staff restrained him. DC Bratby has since returned to duty.
Taylor was convicted of attempted murder at Manchester Crown Court in December 2025.
Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Naismith, of GMP’s Main Investigation Team, said: “Our thoughts are with Alisha’s family and friends… Unfortunately we have never found her body and there is only one person who knows her whereabouts.”
He described the attack on officers as a “bad game” and praised DC Bratby’s bravery. “Officers across the country risk their lives for the public every day.”
Superintendent Chris Smiles, of Durham Constabulary, added that it was “completely unacceptable” that Taylor attacked a police officer who was “simply trying to establish the truth”.
GMP, Durham Police and West Yorkshire Police were involved in the investigation.
Newell was first imprisoned for strangling his neighbor in 1989, and was sentenced to life in prison for a similar prison murder in 2013. Fellows was sentenced to life in prison for two gangland murders. Taylor had a previous criminal record, including aggravated burglary, and was released on license after receiving training in prison.
Approximately 70 prisoners are currently serving life sentences and have no prospect of release except under exceptional humanitarian circumstances. The sentences imposed reflect the seriousness of the crimes committed and the justice system’s response to murders committed even by people already sentenced to life imprisonment.
