MLB news: Cal Raleigh’s nightmare season worsens with oblique injury, IL stint

Last season, Seattle Mariners star catcher Cal Raleigh had the season people dream of. No one is dreaming of having a season in Raleigh this year.
The 29-year-old’s nightmare 2026 season continued Thursday when the Mariners placed Raleigh on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique injury. Raleigh left the Mariners’ 4-3 loss to the Houston Astros on Thursday after aggravating an injury to his right side.
Raleigh snapped the longest scoreless streak in the major leagues with the team’s 10-2 win over the Astors on Tuesday, avoiding a slump of 0-38 in two singles matches.

This is the first IL assignment of Raleigh’s six-year career. Raleigh missed three games from May 2 to May 4 due to right side soreness.
Last season, Raleigh hit .247 with 60 home runs and 125 RBIs in 159 games. He broke Kansas City Royals’ star catcher Salvador Perez’s record for most home runs in a single season with 48.

Raleigh broke New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle’s record for most home runs in a season with 55 by a hitter. He also broke the Mariners’ record for most homers in a season, surpassing Ken Griffey Jr.’s previous record of 56.
This season has been a very different story.

In 41 games this season, Raleigh hit .161 with seven home runs, 18 RBIs, four doubles, 18 walks and 16 runs batted in. His .161 batting average ranks second-lowest in the majors among hitters with decent at-bats. Only Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Cedric Mullins (.150) has a lower average.
The Mariners recalled catcher Jhonny Pereda from Triple-A Tacoma to fill Raleigh’s spot on the active roster.
