MLB news: Tigers prospect Max Clark has blunt reaction to 102 mph fastball

Detroit Tigers top prospect Max Clark had a very honest reaction after seeing a 102.4 mph fastball on the first pitch of the game.

Clark was the leadoff hitter in the Tigers’ 8-7 loss to the Pirates in the Spring Breakout game, facing top prospect Seth Hernandez. Hernandez’s first pitch was a 102.4 mph fastball above the zone that caught Clark’s attention.

After crossing the field, Clark was seen saying, “What the hell?”

Clark, 21, started the inning with a walk. Hernandez induced an inning-ending ground ball double play to complete his lone hit of the game.

The game between the Tigers and Pirates was part of MLB’s Spring Break, an annual four-day event during spring training that features exhibition games between top prospects from all MLB teams.

Clark is the No. 2 overall prospect in the Tigers farm system. MLB.com. At High-A and Double-A last season, Clark hit .271 with 14 home runs and 67 RBIs and could make his big league debut this season, where he’ll see a lot of high-octane heat like Hernandez’s.

19-year-old Hernandez was selected by the Pirates with the 6th overall pick in last year’s draft. Hernandez already has a legitimate four-pitch mix and will start his season in rookie ball.

The Pirates organization hopes Hernandez, along with top prospect Bubba Chandler, will be at the top of the rotation behind National League Cy Young winner Paul Skenes for years to come.
