Mobile Phone Explodes During RGIA Luggage Scan

Hyderabad: Security guards at RGIA Shamshabad were in panic after a passenger’s mobile phone exploded while being scanned in the departures area.

Airport authorities detained passenger Laxman Prasad, who was about to board a flight to Raipur, Chhattisgarh, with his backpack containing the phone. Police sources said their details are being collected for further investigation.

Airport officials then instructed air traffic control to halt domestic flights until permission was given. Passengers had to wait until approval was given by authorities.

Sources revealed that after the explosion, CISF personnel at the domestic departure counter alerted the airport security after spotting the damaged, burnt phone and initially suspected it to be a bomb.

Authorities immediately checked the bag with BD equipment and search dogs. It was later confirmed that the mobile phone had burned down due to a technical malfunction. Although such explosions are rare, they highlight the risks of faulty lithium-ion batteries in electronic devices. Airports generally treat any unexplained explosion as a potential security threat until it can be confirmed. RGIA police station police seized the device and sent it to the Forensic Science Laboratory.
