Moderate quake of magnitude 4.5 recorded in Bay of Bengal, off Andhra Pradesh coast

According to data from the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale hit the Bay of Bengal in the early hours of Sunday, July 12, 2026.
The earthquake occurred at 05:05:46 IST at a depth of 10 km and the epicenter was at 16.805° North, 84.381° East, NCS said. The event has since been classified as “Reviewed” by the agency.
The epicenter was located approximately 227 km east of Kakinada and 275 km east of Rajahmundry, both in Andhra Pradesh, and the earthquake was located off the Bay of Bengal. It was also recorded 282 km south of Berhampur and 367 km south-southwest of Puri in Odisha and 355 km southeast of Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh.
Residents of Visakhapatnam, southwest of the epicenter, took to social media platforms such as X and Reddit shortly after the earthquake, with many users confirming that they felt mild tremors during the event. Tremors lasting several seconds were reported in areas such as MVP Colony, Pedawaltair, Gajuwaka, Yendada and Arilova. No damage or injuries were reported.
