The Congress on Thursday, July 9, 2026, alleged that the Modi government was harming national interests by allowing China to “capture” India’s most critical industries and opening up more opportunities for the Chinese to “develop”.
To attack the government, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge cited a media report alleging that China was still powering India’s strategic industries.

There was no reaction from the government or the BJP to the Congress’s allegations.
He claimed that six years ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given a clean bill to China after 20 brave soldiers made great sacrifice in Galwan.
“Our brave hearts chose martyrdom, but the Modi Government surrendered India’s interests to China,” Mr. Kharge said in a post on X.
He claimed that dependence on China has passed through the most critical sectors of the Indian economy, which should determine the future of the country.
Kharge said since the Galwan conflict, imports from China have “exploded” by 101.81% by 2025-26 and India’s trade deficit with the neighboring country has risen to $112.1 billion.
“China has accounted for a jaw-dropping 86% of India’s antibiotic imports. Why? China has controlled around 74% of India’s imports of APIs, bulk drugs and pharmaceutical intermediates in 2024-25,” he said.
Mr. Kharge also claimed that 66% of India’s EV component imports still come from China.
About 75% of the lithium-ion batteries that power Indian EVs are imported and the vast majority of them are Chinese, he said, adding that India will import about 93% of permanent magnets from China in 2025-26.
“It is appalling that for all the Modi government’s hollow talks on solar energy, China will account for over 99 per cent of India’s imports of non-dispersed silicon wafers in 2025-26, which amounts to an almost complete takeover of the sector that Modi ji claimed to champion during the Atmanirbhar Bharat era. These non-diffused silicon wafers are the basis of our solar cells,” the Congress chief said.
“Now the Modi government has even rolled out the red carpet for ‘Jhoola Friend’ by relaxing restrictions allowing four Chinese companies to bid for India’s own government’s energy projects. Civil society allegations and reports indicate that China continues to encroach on Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh,” Mr. Kharge said.
He said his role in Pakistan’s actions during Operation Sindoor was also acknowledged and officially documented by the Deputy Chief of Army Staff.
“The Modi government has harmed India’s national interests by allowing Beijing to take over India’s most critical industries since Galwan. Now they are opening up more opportunities for the Chinese to thrive under the colorful lens of ‘Laal Aankh’!” said Mr. Kharge, taking a swipe at PM Modi.
