NHS disruption expected amid five-day doctor strike
The people want to continue to look for NHS care despite a five -day strike by doctors who have been 12th industrial action since March 2023.
The strike will start at 7 am on Friday at 7 am and thousands of resident doctors are expected to participate.
NHS England, hospitals and local teams are prepared for industrial action comprehensively, and “patient care to minimize disruption and ensure that life -saving care” plans to apply plans, he said.
NHS UK’s new president Sir Jim Mackey called on hospital leaders to protect routine operations and appointments if possible, and only patient safety is at risk.
However, the British Medical Association (BMA) opposed it, and NHS argued that England’s strategy to attend the work during the strike poses a risk for patients.
Despite the strike, GP operations will normally operate and NHS will remain available for those in need of emergency care services and A & E departments.
It is recommended that the public use 111 online as the first contact point for the emergency but no life -threatening health concerns.
NHS British National Medical Director Professor Meghana Pandit said: “There is no doubt that this industrial action will harm patients and NHS personnel.
“Although some appointments mean that they cannot continue as planned, we do our best to limit it, and patients should continue to use NHS services in a usual way.
“The public should turn 999 in an emergency, and otherwise 111 online, local pharmacist or GP should use and participate in NHS appointments unless otherwise specified.”
BMA Council President Dr Tom Dolphin said: “NHS seems to intend to provide non -emergency care to hospitals on strike days, despite our warnings that England will leave its personnel levels insecure on the board.
“At best, this will leave hospital administrators and senior doctors as confused about what they should plan this week, result in last -minute cancellation, and the worst of all is risky in both urgent and planned care environments.
“Senior doctors, as well as routine studies, while at the same time while continuing routine studies at the same time can not address the resident doctors, and NHS England is irresponsible by claiming that they can do both.
“The priority in strike days should be emergency and emergency care.”
Last June, the strokes of the resident doctors led to the re -planned of 61,989 inpatient and outpatient appointments.
Since the end of 2022, approximately 1.5 million appointments have been planned as a result of industrial action.
BMA said on Tuesday that negotiations with the government aiming to prevent the strike collapsed on the basic issue of salary.
Dr Melissa Ryan and Dr Ross Nieuwoudt, the co -chairmen of the BMA Committee of Doctors Committee, said: “We have always said that no doctor wants to strike and everything is a reliable way to pay the restoration presented by the government.
“We came to talk in good faith, and today we are willing to discover real solutions to the problems faced by the resident doctors.
“Unfortunately, we have not received an offer to meet the scale of these difficulties.
“Even though we were happy to discuss non -paying issues affecting the financing of doctors, we have always been open because there was a payment dispute.”
Health Secretary Wes Streeting, “28.9 percent after a wage increase after a fee,” he said, but the government is looking for ways to improve the working life of the resident doctors, he added.
He said that the Union had the opportunity to work with us on a series of options that will create an extra roles to cope with the bottlenecks that will make a real difference in working conditions of the built -in doctors and to cope with bottlenecks that prevent career progress.
“Instead, they preferred the act of strikes recklessly and unnecessarily.”
“All my attention will now harm patients and support NHS personnel in the workplace.
“In the last three years, a wage increase of 28.9 percent in the last three years and the highest wage increase in the public sector two years later, the strike action is completely unjust, the history of British trade unionism has not been completely similar and a complete disdain for patients and the wider heal of NHS.”
The research came after suggesting that public support was reduced for strike.
A Yougov questionnaire showed that approximately half (52 percent) people in the United Kingdom (52 percent) were “slightly opposed” (20 percent) or “violent opposite” (32 percent).
One -third of 4,954 adults (34 percent) “slightly support” (23 percent) or “strong support” (11 percent) investigated the doctor strike.
Yougov said that five points fell for the question in May, when 48 percent opposed the strikes and 39 percent support them in May.
Daniel Elkeles, General Manager of NHS providers, said that the decision of the strikes was “an overwhelming blow for patients and NHS”.
Resident doctors are qualified doctors in clinical education.
They have completed a medical degree and may have a working experience of up to nine years as a hospital doctor, depending on their specialty, or gain work and experience up to five years to become GP.
