Nearly 250 great apes captive in UK – second highest in Europe | UK | News

Approximately 240 largest monkeys are kept in the zoo in the UK – the second highest in Europe after Germany. Born Free Foundation announced that 75 were kept in rescue centers or sacred areas.

Fourteen Bonobos, 143 chimpanzees, 95 gorillas and 63 orangutans are 315 large monkeys held in 21 zoo, rescue centers or sacred areas. Born Free, who published his report, told us how there is no legal bachelor’s distinction between the status of large monkeys in zoo, zoos, rescue centers and sacred areas holding wild animals in the UK.

Naturalist and publisher Chris Packham described his reports as a “sad catalog to our nearest genetic relatives”. “All evidence that proves radical change is now mandatory. Great monkeys should no longer be imprisoned for our fun.”

Born Free, zoo guidelines to alleviate stress of antidepressants to give large monkey medication, he said.

It is estimated that more than 1,500 large monkeys in 28 European countries are kept in at least 140 zoo.

Germany maintains the highest number in the zoo with 349, then Britain and France, which is 196.

Born Free’s report said that five European countries have kept more than 100 large monkeys in zoos.

Free’s captivity research and policy manager Doğan Chris Lewis said, “Many of us are fascinated by large monkeys because of the similarities we see between themselves and us. When it is limited in zoos, it also means that we are unique to empathy with their pain and lack of freedom.

“Recently, less than half of the British, which is acceptable to keep the major monkeys in the zoo is acceptable, which is more conscious and concerned about the ability of modern society to keep such smart animals under captivity.

“To restrict these complex assets for entertainment cannot be justified on the basis of science, welfare or animal and public security.”

The report of the aid organization comes months after the long -awaited publication of the government’s revised modern zoo implementation standards for the Great Britain, which will enter into force in May 2027.

Born Free said that if this “strict and effectively” is applied, it was “quite controversial” that any United Kingdom zoos can fully meet the new major monkey welfare criteria.

He called for the gradual abolition of the eclipse of large monkeys in zoo, in Europe, Europe and the world.

Dr Jo Judge, CEO of the British and Irish Zoo and Aquariums Association, said: “This report does not realize that good zoo works every day to improve the lives of large monkeys.

“Every big monkey in the care of good zoos is known according to the name and character in the habitats designed with everyday expert care. The life expectancy of big monkeys in human care is much more evidence of this extraordinary care.”

“Simple fact is that good zoo are not only the leaders of the welfare of the monkey, but also leaders in protection. Good, modern zoo are the protector of the natural world and to carry out many protection projects to save big monkeys in the wild nature.

“In the wild nature, the monkeys face tremendous threats, as well as the loss of hunting, disease, disintegration and habitat, as well as the effects of climate change. When a chimpanzee faces the trauma caught in a tramp, they look at their mothers everywhere, and they are cleaned for mining, everywhere.

“The zoo protection makes a significant difference for wild monkeys. Everyone may be proud to support our bright zoo, which provides houses where large monkeys can develop.”
