Mother, toddler found dead in waters near Victorian-South Australian border
The bodies of a woman and young child have been pulled from the ocean near the border of Victoria and South Australia as authorities try to locate a second missing child.
South Australian Police said on Monday evening officers were called to an area west of Port Macdonnell – about 27 kilometers south of Mount Gambier – following reports that a vehicle was found unoccupied and its engine still running.
“During subsequent investigations, police tragically discovered two bodies in the ocean,” police said.
“The bodies of a woman and a small child were found.”
Police confirmed the woman was a 36-year-old resident of nearby Compton and the toddler was her child.
While the search for the second child continues, police have “serious concerns” about the “baby’s” safety.
“Detectives from the Major Crimes Investigation Branch and specialist officers from the Judicial Response Branch are attending the scene,” police said.
It is understood emergency helicopters from both Victoria and South Australia have been called to assist in the search.
