Mount Semeru eruption LIVE: Volcanic ash soars to 54,000ft as travel warning issued | World | News

The eruption of Mount Semeru in Indonesia triggered major flight warnings as ash from the volcano rose as high as 54,000ft. Dramatic images show thick gray ash clouds rising into the sky.

The Australian Volcanic Ash Advisory has issued a red aviation alert where members of the public are prohibited from engaging in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along the Besuk Kobokan.

It is believed to have erupted three times, the first at 4.10am (WIT). The explosion was recorded by a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and lasting 142 seconds.
