MS NOW reporter says Trump used reporters as ‘tools’ to promote ICE enforcement

MS Now senior reporter Jacob Soboroff suggested that footage of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arresting people could be used as a “tool” for the Trump administration.
“onHasan Minhaj Doesn’t KnowOn Wednesday, the podcast’s host Hasan Minhaj asked Soboroff if he believed progressive protesters recording masked ICE agents were “doing what the MAGA base actually wanted” by showing people being detained as they had hoped.
“Yeah, that’s a really good question, and I think there are definitely people within the administration who want people to see this,” Soboroff said. Soboroff replied, adding that he had previously been invited by the first Trump administration to tour immigration detention centers.

He said: “They wanted people to see what it looked like on the inside. They wanted us to explain it because they wanted us to experience it. And in a way, we were the tools.”
Soboroff added that he previously admitted to being used “to a great extent” by the Trump administration in the 2024 documentary “Separated,” which was based on his book about the Trump administration’s family separation policies.
“I think they’re using us reporters to further their message of ‘We’re going to hurt people and this is how it’s going to be,'” Soboroff said.

But the MS NOW reporter said he also saw footage of ICE arrests of people on the street being used to document and publicize “alleged human rights violations.”

“I think the videos on the streets are what encouraged people to stand up and step back,” Soboroff said.
Fox News Digital has reached out to ICE and the White House for comment.

The MS NOW reporter has long been a critic of the Trump administration for its immigration policies, going so far as to claim in 2019: “No one has treated immigrants more inhumanely than the Trump administration — and having seen that firsthand, you can’t take that away from me.”
In June, Soboroff condemned the Trump administration’s immigration raids while covering anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles.

Soboroff said of illegal residents: “These people are our neighbors, co-workers, classmates, friends, community members, fellow parishioners, and churches. They are part of the fabric of the city of Los Angeles.”
