Polarizing L.A. police official keeps post by default

A figure polarized at the Los Angeles Police Commission will protect his seat despite the fact that he has not received a vote of approval from the municipal council.
Erroll Southers, who previously served as the head of the Civil Panel, who had previously watched the LAPD, said that critics were reluctant to control the police chief Jim McDonnell, while at the same time he faced investigations in recent months for the fight against terrorism in Israel.
New members of any city commission must be approved by a municipal council within 45 days after being nominated. Mayor Karen BASS put forward Southers in mid -August, but he was postponed for traveling for the first planned vote, and the Council left the agenda during a meeting in Van Nuys on Friday.
Now that the 45 -day window has passed, more than one authorized Times told Times that the city rules allow Southers to continue in the position for a full five -year period because it was already serving temporarily serving.
Around the town hall, the news about the inertia of the council launched speculation because it was the result of a planning mixture or did not believe that Southers’ supporters could get sufficient votes.
Currently, a former parliamentary member of UCLA and La district supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said that it was almost not heard of one of the city’s most important and high -profile commissions.
“There is a responsibility to approve or approval,” he said from the Council. “I never understood why you were going to campaign for the office, I didn’t vote for anything that is as difficult for the campaign to get there and it is important for the public.”
The police commissioners appointed by the mayor act as an institutional board, determine the LAPD policies, approve the budget and provide surveillance, including the review of civil servants and other serious power uses.
Southers, 68, has been a temporary member of the panel since 2023, when Bass chose it to serve the period of a leaving commissioner.
A former FBI agent and Santa Monica Cop translated the best security guard at USC, pioneered the country -wide search for the next LAPD chef. At the end of the position, he went to McDonnell who loved Southers.
Supporters, Southers’ role depends on the role of a police chief to find out which qualifications they want to participate in the numerous listening sessions with Angelenos, he says. In addition, LAPD has become a regular asset in recruitment activities and graduation.
Mayor Spokesman Zach Seidl praised Southers for the commission management and his career lawyer said, “Deep information about the operations of the police department, more transparency and accountability and commitment to the continuous development of reliable relationships with community members and law enforcement members.”
Teresa Sánchez-Gordon, a retired LA district judge, took part in Southers last month after serving in the role for more than a year.
However, Southers have accumulated a high detector choir that opposes to keep him in the role of lock surveillance, more than all other commissioners.
Although it has long been part of its resume, Southers’ work in Israel in the mid -2000s has become a lighting bar due to an ongoing crisis in Gaza.
Last month, United Nations Commission 1,200 dead and 251 others accused of genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza and 251 others retaliate on Hamas militant attacks kidnapped on October 7, 2023.
According to Gaza Health officials and international aid groups, Israel’s military campaign has killed more than 66,000 people and the majority of civilians so far.
Although Southers said very little about conflict, he previously announced that he had previously traveled to Israel and read with Israeli defense forces to learn about the strategies of anti -terrorism for his academic work.
His opponents argued that his writings should use public support of an individual for controversial reasons as a potential warning sign. They say that such arguments can be used to justify the criminalization of minority groups or justify the silence of the opposition.
Last year, Southers asked the commission to resign last year after being among the USC officials responsible for cleaning the camps occupied by pro -Palestinian protesters on the school campus.
Others focused on the supervision of McDonnell. Very often, critics say that after the latest discussions, the chef came out of the hook. Most recently, Southers and other commissioners encountered calls to make more control over the aggressive behavior of LAPD officers against journalists and non -violent protesters.
Police’s shots were also a point of discussion with Southers. LAPD officers opened fire 31 times in the first nine months of this year, and already exceeded the total number of attractions in 2024.
The Commission ordered the department to present a report about the shooting, but this was almost not enough to satisfy the Greg “Baba” Akili, a long-term defender of the Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles, who has frequently speaking to Southers’ nomination.
As the Chairman of the Commission, Southers said he was willing to close the public speakers at the board meetings.
“Like having a member of the police force in the commission, Akli Akili Southers said. “We don’t just want to see black faces in high places: Actually … We want people who raise the people.”
