Multiple bushfires break out in NSW as brutal heatwave sweeps state

Multiple bushfires have broken out across NSW as the state faces a severe heatwave and dangerous weather conditions.
At least 10 bushfires are currently listed as “under control”, according to a NSW Rural Fire Service map, with one near Newcastle listed with a “watch and act” warning.
The fire service has warned that the bushfire on Sugarloaf Mountain Road in West Wallsend is not yet under control.
The watch and act alert level means there is an emergency developing nearby and residents should “take immediate action to protect” themselves and others.
The next stage of monitoring and action is “emergency alert”; This means affected residents are in “imminent danger” and must take immediate action.
As of 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, there was no emergency alert for the state.
Elsewhere, bushfires are burning alongside the Pacific Highway near Karuah, in the north at Rowena near Lightning Ridge, at Cullendore on the NSW-Queensland border, at Lanitza south of Grafton and elsewhere.
The fire department notes that most wildfires are listed as “contained” or “under control,” but the Rowena fire is not yet under control.
The fires broke out as a dangerous heat wave swept across the state.
