A British mum has claimed a retro dessert costing just 60p cured her migraine headaches. The neurological condition had been bothering 28-year-old Jemma O’Donovan for years. But just 15 minutes after eating the dessert, her symptoms visibly subsided, allowing her to “function” more easily from day to day.
Carer Jemma says migraines are not triggered by anything in particular, but symptoms include vomiting, dizziness, burning pain on one side of the head and double vision. But after eating a Dip Dab, his symptoms improve and the 60p sweet makes him feel better just minutes later.
The 28-year-old, from Bristol, said: “One of the first symptoms I get is a migraine aura, which is flashing lights and colours, usually in one eye. This is my warning sign that I usually have about half an hour to get myself somewhere safe and positioned before I really start to suffer.”

He added: “Sometimes heavy-duty drugs are worse than the migraine itself. Sometimes I choose to live with the headache because the drugs put my body to sleep and everything in my body stops working. “Within about 20 minutes I feel like I can’t lift my arms or walk properly and my whole body feels like cement.
“Medication works, but it always feels like a last resort because of the side effects. [The sweet hack] It was a complete accident. “I went to Tesco and bought a few sweets from the children’s section, including Dip Dab.”
Jemma said Dip Dab made her feel so much better and had become her go-to solution for migraine symptoms.
She explained: “I had a migraine at the time and it was really bad because I think it doubled with my period. I had the Dip Dab and I think the effervescence of it distracted my brain a bit and about 15 minutes after I finished I was like ‘do I feel better?’ I had a moment where I questioned:
“At the time I thought it might have been a fluke, but the next time I had a migraine I went out and bought a few and that’s when I bought one and it helped. It’s not a complete solution, but since I work full time it makes my day easier to manage.”

The NHS advises caution when consuming refined sugary foods such as sweets and energy drinks; because this can lead to a rapid rise in blood sugar followed by a rapid decline, increasing the likelihood of migraines.
Jemma believes the symptoms improved after Dip Dab due to the mix of saltiness and sweetness. He added: “It starts working for me within 15 to 20 minutes. It seems to clear your brain a bit, the pain isn’t that bad and your eyes don’t hurt as much either.”
“You feel like you can get out of bed and open the curtains. It allows you to work through migraine pain and alleviate some of the terrible symptoms. It seems to take away the sensory side of things a little bit. I think Dip Dab is more sugar than salt, but it has a baking soda taste, a little salty, so I guess that’s it.”
Saying that migraine pain can last up to 72 hours, Jemma added that soaking your feet in hot water can also be a useful solution because it “will draw the blood from your head to your feet.”
