Mumbai Weather today: Unseasonal rain welcomes city on first day of 2026. Check IMD’s forecast for next few days

Mumbai residents woke up to a rainy morning on New Year’s Eve, January 1, 2026. Heavy showers were witnessed in many parts of the financial capital on Thursday morning as New Year was celebrated in the city. Instead of welcoming the new year with the first rays of the sun, some parts of Mumbai, especially the island city, were greeted with rains. Mumbai records rainfall during winter months, which is a rare feature for the city.

The rains started shortly before 6 a.m. While the rain became more intense in some regions, heavy rain was observed in many places. After 06.15, the density gradually decreased. According to news agency ANI, Mumbai’s Walkeshwar and Lower Parel districts witnessed light showers, reducing pollution levels.

Mumbai weather forecast

The weather agency, in its latest forecast at 8 am on January 1, predicted light rains for Mumbai and its suburbs in the next 48 hours. Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 29°C and 16°C over the next two days. IMD has predicted that there will be “no significant change” in the minimum temperature in Maharashtra for the next 2 days, but the temperature will increase by 2-3°C over the next 4 days.

Social media users reacted to the unexpected weather. Rahul Bilve wrote to X: “Now who would have thought that it would rain on the first day of 2026?” Another user, Muffi Kapadia, wrote, “#MumbaiRains welcomes 2026 with unseasonal showers. Nice weather though.” Many residents said the unseasonal rains made the weather pleasant in the city.
IMD predicts that the sky will be partly cloudy and hazy in the city and suburbs today, and the maximum and minimum temperature will be around 29 degrees. C and 16 degrees. C respectively. On December 31, IMD said that the maximum temperature will gradually decrease in the Maharashtra region during the next 2 days and then gradually rise. “Gradual decrease of 1-2 degrees followed by gradual increase of 2-3 degrees in minimum temperature in Maharashtra region over the next 2 days,” he added.

Light rain expected in Delhi today

According to IMD, light rain is expected in parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on January 1 under the influence of western disturbance affecting north India. The Met department also warned of dense to very dense fog in parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and western Uttar Pradesh during night and early morning hours, leading to sharp reduction in visibility.

Delhi experienced its harshest December day in six years on Wednesday, December 31, when daytime temperatures fell well below seasonal norms and struggled to rise. Weather officials said “cold day” conditions were recorded when both day and night temperatures remained well below normal; IMD expects this situation to continue until early January. Shallow fog in the evening hours further reduced visibility in various parts of the city, adversely affecting travel conditions.
