New 4-lane flyover to reduce travel time between Thane and Dombivli
Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has upgraded the plan for the railway overbridge (ROB) project at Mothagaon level crossing in Dombivli, widening the plan from two lanes to four lanes to accommodate higher traffic. Once completed, the bridge will be able to reduce the travel time between Dombivli and Thane across the Mankoli flyover from around an hour to just 25 minutes. This will provide much-needed relief to commuters facing traffic congestion in the area.
According to officials, the project, for which the company is working with the support of the railways, will cost around Rs 170 billion. According to a report by The Times of India, to seek approval for financing the project, KDMC has sent the proposal to the state government and the government is likely to give its approval.
The decision to widen the bridge was taken after citizens and local leaders, including former Sena (UBT) corporator Dipesh Mhatre, expressed the need for massive infrastructure to handle the increasing traffic.
As the project will lead to displacement, Mhatre said KDMC has taken the initiative to keep Rs 68 million as compensation for around 600 families and individuals who will have to leave their homes. “This is the first time that KDMC is offering compensation on this scale. Earlier, only transfer of development rights (TDR) was given to those affected by civic projects,” the media report said.
After completion of the project, it is expected to increase connectivity and reduce traffic for thousands of passengers traveling between Dombivli and Thane.
