Murder charges laid in search for well-loved local
A woman has been charged with the murder of a much-loved Mackay local who disappeared from central Queensland more than six months ago.
The 71-year-old First Nations man was reported missing by his family in early November.
At this point, he had been out of contact for weeks, which his family described as out of character.
Police said they arrested a 46-year-old woman who was known to the man around 9:30 a.m. Friday.
He was charged with murder and tampering with a dead body.
Officers were treating the man’s disappearance in early December as suspicious because he did not use bank accounts or do anything generally considered proof of life.
Search teams last year began focusing their efforts on the brush area between the city and the Pioneer River.
The alleged killer was expected to appear in Mackay Magistrates’ Court on Friday afternoon.
