Musk says Tesla is moving Full Self-Driving to a monthly subscription

FSD, which starts at $99 per month, is key to the future of the company as Musk tries to make Tesla a leader in the field of autonomous mobility. The one-time price was $8,000.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tesla launched a limited-available robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, last year, and the company also offers a ride-hailing service in San Francisco, though there’s always a driver behind the wheel.

The company is far behind alphabet Waymo launches driverless service. Waymo reached more than 450,000 weekly paid rides in December, according to Tiger Global’s investor letter seen by CNBC.

Waymo operates in Austin, the San Francisco area, Phoenix, Atlanta and Los Angeles, and aims to expand to several more cities in 2026.

Tesla announced fourth-quarter delivery and production figures in early January, capping the second consecutive annual decline for the electric vehicle maker. Fourth quarter deliveries of 418,227 units were approximately 16% lower than a year ago, and production figures were also down 5.5% from a year ago.

Tesla announced its fourth quarter earnings on January 28.
