Mystery as US Marine vanishes from USS Anchorage during training | World | News

The sailor was assigned to the USS Anchorage during training with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, according to CBS8.
U.S. Navy search and rescue operations were launched after the sailor was reported missing a little after 1 a.m. Thursday.
The Navy carried out search and rescue operations for approximately 43 hours and started rescue operations at 21:00 on Friday.
Personnel from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Air Force assisted in the search.
The crew searched about 2,400 square miles using three surface ships and 12 aircraft, officials said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and everyone affected during this difficult time,” Deputy Public Affairs Officer Lt. Alissa Whyte said in a statement. he said.
The Navy has not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to Nany policy, the identity of the seafarer is withheld until 24 hours after notification to next of kin.
The investigation into the incident continues.
