Nancy Guthrie Abduction Motive Identified as Possible ‘Revenge’ After Reports Savannah Is ‘Questioning’ How Much Her ‘Spotlight’ Put Her ‘Family’s Safety’ at Risk
One of the most surprising things, a month and a half into the Nancy Guthrie investigation, is how little we know about what happened the night that Savannah Guthrie’s mother was kidnapped. Police have released surveillance video and photos and recovered DNA, but no suspects have yet been identified and no motive has been released.
So do the police know why? Are they any closer to finding out who did this and why? Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said recently: NBC Nightly News Investigators believe they know why Nancy Guthrie’s home was targeted. “We believe we know why he did this and we believe he was targeted, but we can’t, we’re not 100% sure,” Nanos said.

“So it would be stupid to tell people, ‘Yeah, don’t worry. You’re not his target.'” Don’t think for a moment that just because this happened to the Guthrie family, you’re safe. No, come to your senses,” Nanos said.
Former FBI special agent Harry Trombitas also told Yahoo that the motive may have been money-related, but that was “increasingly less likely to come to light.” “There are so many things,” Trombitas said. “There are so many ways people can get caught.” Not only that, but he explained that kidnappings for ransom are actually quite rare and have “really decreased over the years.”
He explained: “[The motive] “There may be some form of revenge, anger, or there may be a third purpose that we are not even aware of.”
At this point, the investigation focuses on processing the “mixed” DNA obtained from Nancy Guthrie’s home, as well as following leads from neighbors, including a focus on a possible vacant house in the neighborhood and anyone who might have worked in the neighborhood in the days before her disappearance. There are also reports that police are investigating a damaged electrical box that may be linked to a reported internet outage at the time of the hijacking.
“The FBI and law enforcement will continue to investigate this case as if he were still alive,” Trombitas added. “Given his age at 84 and some of the health issues he has, I know the odds of him being found alive are not as high as they were at first.”

Guthrie has been missing since the night of January 31 and the morning of February 1. The reward for information regarding the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie is now up to $1 million.
