Girl, 8, dies after medical episode at primary school

A school in south Wales has been closed following the death of an eight-year-old girl.

Penrhys Primary School in Ferndale was closed Thursday after the school announced it had experienced a “traumatic event” following the death of a student.

South Wales Police were called to the primary school in Rhondda on Wednesday following reports that the pupil was suffering a medical crisis.

They said an eight-year-old girl was taken to hospital and later died. They said there was nothing suspicious.

The school posted a statement on Facebook Wednesday afternoon announcing the tragedy.

The following statements were included in the statement: “Due to the traumatic incident that occurred in our beautiful school this afternoon, we will be closed to all children tomorrow.

“The school will reopen for children and staff on Friday.”

Tylorstown and Ynyshir local councilor Julie Edwards said the incident was being investigated by South Wales Police.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “South Wales Police are investigating the sudden death of an 8-year-old girl in Ferndale.

“Emergency services were called to Penrhys Primary School in Ferndale to reports of a medical incident just after 2pm on Wednesday, October 8. The girl was taken to hospital and later died.

“There are no suspicious circumstances and the investigation is currently ongoing on behalf of the coroner.”

Major Julie Edwards posted the following statement on social media: “I have been made aware of a tragic incident in Penrhys on Wednesday. South Wales Police are fully investigating the matter and further details will be released shortly.

“It is still very early in the investigation and they have asked residents not to speculate to prevent the spread of misinformation.

“I will update the post when I have more information to share.”
