Navy beats Army as Trump’s attendance sparks protests

Navy Midshipmen earned the Commander-in-Chief’s Award for the second consecutive year.

The Midshipmen earned a gutsy 17-16 victory over Army in one of the greatest rivalries in sports.

Navy got off to a scorching start, scoring a touchdown on their first drive as Blake Horvath ran for 45 of 75 yards and a score. He also had an 11-yard touchdown pass.

But Army responded with the same move, running 13 plays for 75 yards; this time it ended with Cale Hellums throwing a punch.

Navy’s offense stalled for a long time as its next three drives resulted in a punt, fumble and interception. Meanwhile, the Black Knights managed to score three more baskets and take the lead 16-7. Late in the third quarter, the Midshipmen finally added more points to the scoreboard and cut the lead to three.

Early in the fourth quarter, Navy forced a stoppage on Army. Navy kept the ball at the goal line, but the quarterback fumbled on a sneak, losing seven yards. Horvath hit Eli Heidenrich in the end zone, and the ensuing hit gave the Midshipmen their first lead since the game’s first drive.

Navy immediately forced a three-and-out and got the ball back with less than five minutes left in the game. Navy unsuccessfully tried to get a first down that would have iced the game, but the play was reviewed and the call was reversed. So Navy got a fourth-and-1 and kept the offense on the field. They scored the first goal that froze the match.

With this win, Navy won the Commander-in-Chief award, having also beaten the Air Force earlier in the year.

The game was the usual old school style of football as there were only 24 pass attempts compared to 86 runs.

President Donald Trump attended the game for the seventh time and his second in as many years since his re-election. Trump also participated in the coin toss, but protesters began using obscene signs against Trump on the street leading to the stadium.

Protests were expected for the game in the blue city, as Trump suggested sending the National Guard to Baltimore to help stamp out the city’s rampant crime. Baltimore consistently ranks among U.S. cities with high crime rates, often ranking in the top 5 for violent crime, especially murders and robberies.

The protests against Trump come on the same day that officials said two U.S. Army soldiers and a U.S. translator were killed in an ambush attack in Syria.
