NBA star Tristan Thompson says he ‘understands’ Trump’s immigration stance

Veteran Cleveland Cavaliers center Tristan Thompson expressed his nuanced thoughts on the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration as a legal immigrant.
“Which President [Donald] “Trump, first of all, I love what he’s done for our country so far,” Thompson said in a preview of an upcoming episode of “The Katie Miller Podcast.” “I think it helped our country a lot.”
He added: “In terms of where he stands [immigration]I think…I definitely believe that because I have family members and I have people who are immigrants. I believe that people who do their job correctly and receive documents should be given priority attention. I think this is correct. “I think that’s the right way to move forward on this.”

Thompson empathized with obtaining legal documents for several people he described as “stranded between states” and described a more “nuanced” position on immigration.
“I think it has to be done on a case-by-case basis with the right people. I understand where he’s coming from, but for me it depends on who the person is,” Thompson said.

Thompson was born in Canada but became a US citizen during the first Trump administration before joining the Boston Celtics in 2020.
“I came to the United States on a student visa and always had big dreams. Now I’m truly living the American dream,” Thompson said, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Thompson told Miller the process was surprisingly quick but denied his NBA status had any bearing.
“I think it was just because of the pandemic, so they acted quickly,” Thompson said.
