NCB Imphal Zonal Unit busts major heroin trafficking network in Manipur

Guwahati: In a significant breakthrough against cross-border drug smuggling, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), in close coordination with the Imphal Area Unit, Assam Rifles and Manipur Police, successfully carried out a joint operation in a remote area near Khuakhual, Churachandpur District, Manipur.

A vehicle and a motorcycle were seized during the operation. During the searches, 374 soap boxes containing approximately 4,267 kg of heroin were seized. The estimated international market value of the seized contraband is ₹ 8.5 crore.

Two people involved in smuggling were detained. In addition, two wireless communication devices used to ensure coordination between the defendants during the transportation of contraband were also seized.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the source of the contraband was Haichin, Myanmar, and the intended destination was Churachandpur, Manipur.

This seizure highlights the ongoing problem of drug trafficking along the Indo-Myanmar border, which remains a sensitive route exploited by transnational drug syndicates.

The Narcotics Control Bureau is constantly intensifying its operations in the Northeast Region, especially along the Indo-Myanmar border, to dismantle drug trafficking networks. This seizure, in addition to the NCB’s series of successful operations in Manipur, reflects its continued commitment to disrupting the flow of narcotics and disrupting supply chains.
A large number of cases have been registered by the NCB in recent times, leading to significant seizures and arrests, significantly affecting the organized drug trafficking networks operating in the region. In 2025, different types of drugs worth Rs 335 Million were seized by NCB in Manipur and by 2026, drugs worth Rs 75 Million have been seized so far. These efforts are in line with the Government of India’s vision of making Manipur a drug-free state with a strong focus on inter-agency coordination, intelligence-led operations and stringent enforcement against smugglers.

Further investigation into the incident is ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the network and trace back and forth links.
