Neglected Qutb Shahi Monuments Face Encroachment

Hyderabad: Many ancient monuments, including the mosques and tombs around the Golconda Fort and the Qutb Shahi Tombs complex, are in a dilapidated state; Some parts of it are crumbling and these areas are turning into dumping grounds.

One such site in Vinayak Nagar, Shaikpet, described as a mini archaeological site by locals, consists of four Qutb Shahi period tombs and two mosques. While dumping and encroachments cause further damage, structures remain neglected, covered with overgrown vegetation.

Local resident and heritage activist Mohd Habeeduddin said the monuments were built in various architectural styles and urged the state government to restore and preserve them. Historians noted that many monuments lack names and signboards, and even if they are not on the protection list, authorities must provide basic maintenance, restoration and documentation.

History researcher Dheeraj Vanarasa said Qutb Shahi legacy extends beyond the Golconda Fort and Tombs, but many monuments in Shaikpet have been lost or abandoned. “From Malkam Cheruvu to the Seven Tombs area, there were once numerous monuments, but many were never identified or marked. Many areas have fallen into disrepair due to population growth, urban development and encroachments,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of social participation in the preservation of monuments. “Preserving and documenting the scattered monuments will help local people understand their history and give tourists a better understanding of the heritage of the area. Even a small clean-up effort makes a big difference,” he added.
