NEP aims to create job-givers not job-seekers, says Governor Arlekar

The main objective of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is to create entrepreneurs not only from job seekers but also students, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar said on Thursday.

Addressing the students of Guru Nanak College on the occasion of the institution’s 50th Graduation Day, Mr. Arlekar said, “Is the purpose of education only to find a job? Will I be a job seeker? Or will I be an employer? That is what we have to decide.” He observed that the education provided in institutions should reflect what the land has learned. This should go a long way in achieving self-sufficiency and will contribute to nation building, he said, adding that NEP2020 was the first serious attempt to decolonize education in the country. Later, Mr. Arlekar distributed medals and certificates to the students who ranked highest in their branches.

Guru Nanak College Principal RM Ezhilarasi said the institution was established in 1971 with 450 students enrolled in three undergraduate programmes, which has grown to 7,000 students enrolled in 28 undergraduate, nine masters, eight doctoral research programs and over 80 skill-based and value-added certificate courses.

Guru Nanak College General Secretary and Correspondent Manjit Singh Nayyar and Examinations Controller Anitha Mallisetty were also present at the event.
