Tensions continue to flare in Birgunj, near the Indian border shared with Bihar, since Sunday, following a dispute between the two groups triggered by joint comments on a video from Dhanusha’s Kamala Municipality that went viral on TikTok.
The controversy broke out when two people, Haider Ansari and Amanat Ansari, uploaded a TikTok video in Dhanusha, Janakpur, which locals said had hurt religious sentiments and led to police intervention. Tensions increased after a mosque was vandalized in Kamala Municipality’s 6th ward.
Protests have increased around Birgunj with rallies, tire burning and slogan shouting continuing since Sunday.
The unrest, which initially started in Dhanusha and Parsa districts of Madhesh State, escalated through TikTok, with both parties taking to the streets over issues affecting religious and communal sentiments.
