New Barbie Dream Fest slammed as ‘disastrous’ as guests compare it to infamous Willy Wonka Experience

Fans who spent hundreds of dollars to attend a Barbie festival were outraged by the ‘nightmare’ and ‘disaster’ event, comparing it to the infamous Willy Wonka Experience and Fyre Festival.

The Barbie Dream Festival took place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida over the weekend and has been described as ‘the biggest Barbie fan event’ where ‘fashion meets fun’.

According to its Instagram page, the festivities are set to include ‘an interactive Barbie DreamHouse, an 80s-era disco skating rink, a ‘Totally Hair’ glam bar, a cycling class, inspirational panels, yoga, hands-on crafts, a quintessential Barbie fashion show, doll exhibitors and exclusive merchandise, as well as special guests from stars like Serena Williams, Angel Reese and more.

Scores of excited fans rushed to purchase tickets, with prices ranging from $72 for a single-day ticket to $452 for a multi-day VIP pass, but when they arrived they discovered it was far from what they expected.

Participants are filling Reddit, TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) with frustration, describing it as a ‘chaotic’ experience with panels being canceled and no guidance from staff.

One fan wrote on Reddit that he was “really excited” when the event was first announced and purchased a three-day ticket for $300. They also said they spent hundreds on a hotel room, bringing the weekend total to over $1,000.

‘I was immediately disappointed as transportation to the convention center was chaotic,’ they wrote.

‘There were no symptoms’ [explaining] How to get into the convention center… I’m lost and very angry.’

They also revealed that the promised ‘free gift bag’ was just a ‘small pack of hand sanitizer with Barbie written on it’.

‘I looked at it and was surprised they could advertise it as a gift bag,’ they continued.

‘It was just a Dollar Tree hand sanitizer with the word Barbie on it. ‘No special Barbies, no pins or stickers, no nothing.’

The Reddit user went on to describe the “disorganized” event, explaining that there were “no signs showing you where to go” and no schedules.

‘You had to look it up on the internet [to see when the panels were] and I hope it’s true, but then things got canceled or moved and you didn’t know where they went,’ they wrote.

They also criticized the lack of events and vendors, stating: ‘There were maybe 10 vendors in the entire exhibit hall and only four of them had anything Barbie related.

‘I walked through the entire showroom in maybe 10 minutes and that was while seeing everything the vendors had to offer. And then it was done.

‘How could they justify the cost of this incident when that was all they had to offer?

‘Mattel was even promoting this event! Is this the best they can do? Pathetic. If you’re debating going, don’t!’

Another claimed on Reddit that the skating rink was ‘a 20×40 square meter concrete slab with no decorations in the middle of the market’, while the promised life-size Barbie DreamHouse was actually ‘a cheap backdrop with a picnic table on fake grass’.

“I spent over $1,000 traveling here, booking an Airbnb, and buying tickets,” they added.

Definitely not worth it. I used to coordinate events at the university with TINY budgets and it was much better.

‘Who coordinated this? They should be fired. ‘I expected much better from an official Barbie/Mattel event.’

Another angry participant commented: ‘I’m there too. I was going to stay until Sunday, so I changed my flight to leave tomorrow morning.

‘It’s so sad that it’s so terrible there. I don’t want to come back tomorrow. ‘I paid $300 for the Pink Pass and I feel cheated.’

“Barbie Dream Festival…more like Barbie Fyre festival, SAVE MONEY,” another wrote on a post about the experience on Reddit.

They announced that they had paid $250 and branded it a ‘disaster’.

‘Our ‘loot bag’ was a hand sanitizer. I paid $250 for this. It’s not even just a case of expectations versus reality; ‘This is outright lying,’ they became angry.

“We made Fyre happy,” a different Barbie fan wrote on Reddit. ‘Anyone else spending good money and PTO on this?’

A participant named Jessica Nova documented the event on: TikTokand his video went viral.

‘We paid $250 per pass. “Barbie Dream Fest is a nightmare,” she wrote, pointing out the minimal skating rink and uninspiring Barbie DreamHouse backdrop.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Barbie Dream Fest and Mischief Management, a company that ‘hosts fandom conventions’ and helped create the event, for comment.

In a statement to the New York Post, Mischief Management said: ‘Mischief Management is incredibly grateful to everyone who attended Barbie Dream Fest.

‘We appreciate the passion and involvement of the Barbie community. Bringing fans together alongside Barbie role models, designers, partners and global icons who embody the true spirit of Barbie was at the heart of this event.
