Plans to open a major new supermarket in a British seaside town have hit quite literally a minor snag. A proposed Lidl store in Ramsgate is facing delays after concerns were raised about reptiles potentially living in the area. The project, earmarked for Manston Road in Ramsgate, was due to go before planners but the decision has been delayed as councilors are expected to revisit it on May 20, according to local reports.
This inhibition stems from an environmental assessment that highlights what common lizards can survive on land. Studies conducted between 2014 and 2020 recorded sightings of the species in this region; This led to a re-examination, despite the site receiving redevelopment approval more than a year ago.
Thanet District Council officials have reportedly been informed that further steps are needed, including a mitigation plan to protect the reptiles, before any green light is given. Sun.
As part of this process, Kent County Council’s biodiversity team called for a compensation strategy, with developers agreeing to set aside more than £80,000 to address environmental impacts.
The common lizard, also known as the viviparous lizard (Zootoca vivipara), is the UK’s most common reptile.
Typically measuring between 10 and 15 cm (5 or 6 in), the species are harmless but are legally protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and so it is illegal to harm or disturb them.
Despite ecological concerns, the supermarket proposal received strong public support. Nearly 300 residents supported the plan, citing benefits including new jobs, improved access to nearby housing and relief from rising living costs.
The planned store will cover more than 23,000 square meters and include more than 120 parking spaces, electric vehicle charging points, bus stops and solar panels.
About 40 jobs are expected to be created if the development eventually receives approval.
If approved, it will be the second Lidl in the town, alongside its existing site on Margate Road.
