New York Democrats recently passed a bill that would remove the words “mom” and “dad” from parts of state law and sent the legislation to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s desk for final approval.

Under the new bill, which targets the state’s child custody and parenting laws, “mother” becomes “pregnant parent,” “father” becomes “nonpregnant parent” and “paternity” becomes “parenthood.”

It passed the State Senate this week after being approved in the House in March.

While Democrats who drafted the bill claimed the change in wording would promote “inclusivity,” critics claimed the change was unnecessary because the legislative session ends for the year on Thursday. FOX 5 New York reported.

Hochul said at a news conference that he was not familiar with the proposal but promised to review it.

“I need to review these and make a decision by the end of the year, so I will not comment on pending legislation,” Hochul said.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman shared several posts on social media Friday responding to the bill.

“In Kathy Hochul’s New York, ‘mother’ is now defined as ‘pregnant parent,'” Blakeman wrote. “Not when I become governor! I will defend moms and dads against this madness.”
