We thought we’d give you something a little different as an Easter treat. Adam and Chris teamed up to take an in-depth look at the Home Office, the government department dealing with some of the most important and politically significant issues of our time. The idea was hatched in October last year when Home Affairs Minister Shabana Mahmood took over and said it was “not yet fit for purpose” and “doomed to fail”. He was channeling his predecessor 20 years earlier, John Reid, who first made famous the phrase ‘not fit for purpose’. We ask, with the help of former insiders and interior ministers, can the same decision be reached twenty years apart, are the problems in the department fundamental? In this third of three episodes in the series, Adam and Chris are joined by home and legal affairs reporter Dominic Casciani to reflect on what we’ve heard, find out what the department has to say, and see what Shabana Mahmood is looking to change things.
