Five new suspects arrested over Louvre jewellery theft

Five More suspects have been arrested for their involvement in the Louvre robbery, the Paris prosecutor said.

Laure Beccuau’s office said the suspects were arrested in the Paris area on Wednesday night.

According to AFP, a prime suspect was among those detained. New arrests come after two men “partially recognized” their participation In Wednesday’s brazen theft.

Items worth 88 million euros (£76 million; $102 million) were stolen from the world’s most visited museum when four thieves broke into the building in broad daylight on 19 October.

The jewels have not yet been recovered, Beccuau told French radio station RTL on Thursday.

He added that the DNA of one of those arrested may be linked to the crime scene.

French investigators are not providing further details at this stage, but new suspects could be detained for up to four days before being charged or released.

Authorities believe the gang involved in the robbery may be larger than the four men captured on CCTV.
