Nicole Kidman recalls learning of her mother’s death before Venice award

Nicole Kidman describes the day she learned her mother had died.
The 58-year-old actress opened up about a number of things, including learning about her mother’s death in September 2024, during HISTORYTalks 2026, a live speaker series hosted by the History Channel, just before she won best actress for “Babygirl” at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024.
“I won the best actress award at the Venice Film Festival. That seems to be a very common theme throughout my life,” she said. Hollywood Reporter. “I was about to go on stage and I found out my mother had died. I immediately went to my room in Venice, got into bed, and was completely devastated.”
He recalled feeling like he didn’t know how he could go on without his mother, saying: “She was a huge part of my being. The idea of being there at that moment was distressing.”

The “Big Little Lies” star began taking steps to leave Venice as soon as possible, stating that “the idea of being there at that moment was sad.”
“I remember getting on a boat on the canal and literally trying to find my way to the airport at night, then turning around and leaving, I can’t even do that,” he said. “Then I went back to bed and I was alone. My husband wasn’t there. My kids weren’t there. I went to win an award. What was supposed to be a beautiful thing ended up being this. But life has a contrast.”
Kidman, who went through this tragic experience alone, says she now tells people, “That’s when I realized I was resilient and could endure almost anything.”
Kidman’s mother, Janelle, died in September 2024 at the age of 84.

Two years after her mother’s death, the Academy Award-winning actress shared her plans to become a death doula with investigative journalist Vicky Nguyen as part of the private school’s Silk Speaker Series.
“My mother was alone when she passed away, and there was only so much the family could provide,” Kidman said. San Francisco Chronicle. “My sister and I have so many kids between us and we have careers and jobs and we wanted to take care of my dad because he wasn’t in the world anymore, and that’s when I said, ‘I wish there were these people in the world who could sit neutrally and just provide comfort and care.'”

Kidman has two daughters, Sunday Rose (17) and Faith Margaret (15), with her ex-husband Keith Urban. His sister Antonia has six children.
The actor has spoken many times about his close bond with his mother over the years. Sydney Morning Herald She talked about how her mother always pushed her to follow her dreams, saying: “She made her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to make their own path.”

“My mother didn’t necessarily get the career she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters had equal opportunities,” Kidman added. “This gave me my life. He gave me my life, him and my father.”

Kidman is following in her mother’s footsteps as a supportive mother as she supports her daughter Sunday Rose in her budding modeling career.
She made her runway debut in 2025, walking for Miu Miu at Paris Fashion Week.
