Reform UK is on track to win the next general election after its success in local elections, a cheerful Nigel Farage has claimed. The reform leader said his rebel party was “far beyond anything I ever thought possible”.
This comes as Reform took some of the council seats in traditional northern districts from Labor. Speaking at the party’s Millbank headquarters in the early hours, he likened his gains to clearing the famously challenging Becher’s Brook Grand National jump.
He said: “This was our Becher Stream for me. If we get past the Becher Stream and have a good landing, we’ll go on to win the Grand National.
“What is very clear to me is that our voters will now stay with us until the end.
“They don’t vote for Reform.”
Mr Farage continued: “I think what you are witnessing is a historic shift in British politics. Forget left-right, there is no left-right anymore. It’s gone, out the window, over.”
“As you can see we are getting stunning percentages in traditional old Labor areas.
“We are currently getting an average of 39% of the vote, the number of seats available, we have now won 145 seats.
“We are way beyond anything I ever thought possible.”
Looking ahead to results expected later on Friday, he added: “You’ll see the same pattern repeated down south when we win Essex by an extraordinary margin and Norfolk by an extraordinary margin.”
The reform came as Halton gained 15 councilors in Cheshire, the first local authority to complete its count. Reform won with more than 50 percent of the vote in some areas.
In Hartlepool, Reform won all 12 seats on offer, depriving the previously Labor-held council of overall control; Labor also lost control of Redditch, where Reform won eight of the nine seats going into the election.
Reform claimed Labor voters had “switched straight to Mr Farage’s team”.
He said of Party X: “It is clear that Labor voters are heading straight for Reform.
“We are breaking through the red wall in a way that pollsters and pundits did not foresee. Britain wants Reform.”
