No more global policing: Pentagon’s new defence doctrine – America first, allies later | World News

Washington: The USA announced its new approach in the latest ‘National Defense Strategy’. The Pentagon’s 34-page report makes clear that America will not take responsibility for protecting its allies. Instead, he will focus primarily on defending his homeland and the Western Hemisphere. This approach differs from past policies that always viewed China as the main threat. The report now emphasizes a strong and careful intervention against Beijing rather than a direct confrontation.

The report addresses allied countries directly, noting that many have long relied on Washington for their security but have done little themselves. America now expects these nations to cope with the threats that affect them most, especially in Europe and Asia.

The approach to Russia is also measured. The report describes Moscow as a “manageable threat” primarily to NATO’s eastern members, despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Taiwan’s absence from the strategy sends a strong message to Beijing.

Trump’s discomfort with NATO

The strategy demonstrates Trump’s ‘America First’ philosophy. During his second term, he openly criticized NATO, claiming that the United States gained little from the alliance. Although the claim that America pays 100 percent of NATO expenses is not true, the pressure on the allies is obvious.

US asserts its influence

The report emphasizes that the United States will maintain military and economic access to strategic regions, including the Panama Canal, Greenland and the American Gulf, regardless of whether allies support these moves.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the strategy shows that the old global order will not return and said, “If we are not at the table, at least we will be on the menu.”

French President Emmanuel Macron also warned that the world was moving “without rules”.

Idealism is over

The Pentagon’s message is clear and easy to understand. The United States will no longer assume responsibility for global security. Countries that rely on Washington will now have to protect themselves and pay for their defense. Those who fail to do so may no longer receive the same level of support.
