No RTO Visit Needed For New Vehicle Registration

Hyderabad: The long-awaited vehicle registration request in showrooms will become a reality in approximately two weeks. The transport department on Thursday issued a government order (GO) allowing registration of new vehicles without visiting the RTO.
Under the new system, motorcycle and car buyers will no longer need to take their vehicles to RTOs for initial registration.
The move, which was first stated by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar during an interaction with Deccan Chronicle in May 2024, aims to simplify procedures for new vehicle owners. The new facility will be operational in two weeks. Taxes and registration fees will not change.
RTA officials welcomed the decision, stating that RTOs are under heavy workload and around 3,000 vehicles are registered every day across the state. The registrations will be processed through the Sarathi portal, the central online platform of the transport department.
According to the new system, newly purchased non-transport motorcycles and motor vehicles will not need to be produced at the RTO office for initial registration.
The facility is applicable to fully built vehicles sold through authorized automobile dealers under Rule 48-B of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. Under this mechanism, the authorized dealer will apply online for permanent registration on behalf of the buyer. Required documents including invoice, Form-21, Form-22, insurance information, proof of address and vehicle photographs will be uploaded online by the dealer.
After inspection by the transport department official, a registration number will be issued and the Registration Certificate (RC) will be sent directly to the vehicle owner via speed post.
Automobile dealers welcomed the state government’s decision to allow vehicle registration at showrooms. Vijay Mohan, managing director of Sansai Motors Group, said this move will benefit vehicle buyers. He said many customers face difficulties in queuing for long hours at RTA offices and often losing the entire day. The official added that dealers are fully prepared to implement the new registration process once it comes into force.
