No stops here! THIS is India’s first city without any traffic lights

The city became the first in the country to operate completely without traffic lights. Thanks to smart planning and innovative infrastructure, residents and travelers can travel within the city without any problems.

This not only resulted in faster commuting, but also fewer accidents and less fuel consumption.

Known as the coaching capital of India, Kota has achieved a rare milestone that no other city in the country has achieved. The city in Rajasthan became the first city in India to operate without any traffic lights. Thanks to smart planning and innovative infrastructure, residents and travelers can travel within the city without any problems. Kota’s Urban Improvement Trust (UIT) spearheaded this transformation with its vision of never-stopping traffic.

How did the city achieve this?

Authorities in the city made this possible by creating a network of interconnected ring roads. This means vehicles can bypass typically congested intersections, significantly reducing travel time and keeping traffic flowing efficiently. More than two dozen overpasses and underpasses have been built at major intersections in the city to improve mobility. This not only enabled faster commuting, but also resulted in fewer accidents and less fuel consumption; hence it has proven to be more environmentally friendly.

Kota as a role model

The quota could prove to be an effective role model for other cities in the country and around the world that regularly struggle with slow traffic and congestion. This is especially true in major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, which are notorious for traffic congestion.
