Beleaguered KKR seek spark to halt slide against in-form PBKS

The three-time champions can point to the absence of front-line players Mustafizur Rahman, Harshit Rana, Akash Deep and Matheesha Pathirana in their maiden campaign, but the bigger problem lies in the flawed team strategy that has left them facing a third successive defeat.
The decision not to retain Shreyas Iyer, who led them to the 2024 title, raised eyebrows and in hindsight the situation looked even worse.
Iyer went on to prove himself right by leading Punjab Kings to second place in 2025, becoming the first captain to guide three different teams to the finals – Delhi Capitals (2020), KKR (2024 champions) and PBKS (2025).
In contrast, KKR had a memorable season last season, finishing eighth for the first time since 2009.
Ajinkya Rahane, who was brought in as captain despite not being very good in the T20 order, silenced the critics to some extent by emerging as the leading name. However, the team’s thinking, including the appointment of Abhishek Nayar as head coach to replace Chandrakant Pandit, has come under scrutiny.
Nayar, incidentally, was the coach of UP Warriorz, who finished last in this year’s WPL. Mixed strategy is most evident in team combinations.
Despite having three of New Zealand’s best players – Finn Allen, Tim Seifert and Rachin Ravindra – KKR failed to utilize their resources effectively.
While Allen is the only one who could get a review, Seifert, the second-highest run-getter of the last T20 World Cup, and Ravindra, a proven spin bowling all-rounder, continue to warm up the bench.
Instead, KKR’s persistence with Sunil Narine, who has been a franchise regular since 2012 despite diminishing returns, has raised questions.
The situation is further complicated by the inclusion of all-rounder Cameron Green, who has been restricted from bowling by Cricket Australia, leaving the two overseas players unable to fully contribute.
Add to this the presence of another proven T20 player, Rovman Powell, in the side and KKR’s selection calls are looking increasingly confusing.
Even the high-profile support staff (Shane Watson, Dwayne Bravo and Andre Russell) failed to provide clarity, which leads one to wonder who is calling the shots at KKR.
While their bowling was expected to be worrying, the batting did no better.
Rahane’s move to promote himself to opener has yielded mixed results and the squad looks weak after the 5th place.
In their first home match, they were bowled out for 161 in just 16 overs as they chased 227 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in a free-flowing Paradise.
While the lower middle order of Ramandeep Singh and Anukul Roy lacked firepower, Narine was pushed to No.8, reflecting the lack of an established plan.
On the contrary, the Punjab Kings are going their own way.
They are coming into the match with two wins in two matches under the leadership of Iyer, who knows the conditions of Eden well.
Youngster Cooper Connolly came in at No. 3 with 108 runs from two matches, while Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh provided explosive starts.
Iyer secured the middle parts securely.
Their bowling unit of Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen and Vijaykumar Vyshak looks balanced, with experienced leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal adding more oomph.
The few positives for KKR include the efforts of Kartik Tyagi and youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi, but these sparks alone may not be enough against a well-oiled Punjab unit.
