Noah Lyles wins 100m at US championships in world-leading 9.79s
Noah Lyles ran a world-leading 9.79 seconds to an impressive victory in the 100 meters at the US track and field championships.
He also tied his personal best, achieved by winning the gold medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, with a run at Icahn Stadium in New York City.
The previous 100m best for 2026 was 9.82 by Jamaica’s Oblique Seville in June.
“I think I made the statement, ‘I’m still the fastest man in the world,'” Lyles said.
The 29-year-old American finished the race in second and third place, ahead of Ronnie Baker, with a time of 9.88, and both were given a time of 9.88. Former world champion Christian Coleman came in fourth with a time of 9.93.
“Just because this year is an off year doesn’t mean I’m planning on running slow,” Lyles added, referring to the fact that there will be no Olympics or World Championships this year.
“This is me being me, and being me is dominant, being consistent.”
2023 world champion Sha’Carri Richardson won the women’s 100 meters with a time of 10.77.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be back in a better place, mentally, physically and emotionally healthy,” said Richardson, who has had problems off the track.
“Everything my coach and I have been working on is starting to come together consistently.”
