A 440-year-old world map has sparked fresh debate over the possible resting place of Noah’s Ark after researchers spotted a striking detail hidden inside the artwork.
Created by Italian cartographer Urbano Monte in 1587, the giant map appears to show the biblical ark resting high in the Ararat mountains in modern-day Turkey.
The same area has long been the focus of decades of speculation surrounding the mysterious Durupınar Formation, a massive boat-shaped area that some researchers have speculated is linked to Noah’s Ark.
The renewed fascination stems from the fact that the Book of Genesis states that the Ark rested on the “mountains of Ararat” after the Great Flood.
Why do researchers attribute the ancient map to Noah’s Ark?
Online researchers immediately noticed similarities between Monte’s illustration and the location of the Durupınar excavation site in eastern Türkiye.
Independent researcher Jimmy Corsetti wrote online: “Same location, almost the same length as the Durupınar area. Coincidence?”
The formation is located approximately 29 kilometers south of Mount Ararat and has attracted international attention since the mid-20th century.
According to local reports, the unusual shape became clearer after severe weather and earthquakes hit the area in 1948, leading to claims that the area resembled the outline of a giant ship.
Supporters of the theory often point to biblical measurements that describe Noah’s Ark as 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high; dimensions are generally estimated to be roughly 515 feet by 86 feet.
Some researchers believe that the Durupınar Formation largely reflects these proportions.

What was found in the latest scans of the Durupınar site?
Interest in the region intensified again when the Noah’s Ark Surveys research group began examining the region using modern radar and thermal imaging technology.
According to a report by the Daily Mail , the team recently claimed that their underground scans had revealed unusual cavities and structured areas beneath the surface.
Researcher Andrew Jones said ground-penetrating radar showed a corridor pattern leading towards a larger empty space beneath the earth.
“The interesting thing is that these cavities line up underground and they’re not just random,” he told GB News.
“These tunnels also follow a pattern. GPR is a way of looking under the ground using radar.”
Jones also claimed that infrared thermography scans suggested that a large ship-like shape could be buried underground.
However, many scientists and geologists continue to claim that this formation is a naturally occurring geological structure and that there is no definitive evidence yet that Noah’s Ark was found.

Why is the Urbano Monte map so unusual?
Monte’s massive Planisphere was produced at a time when European explorers were rapidly expanding the known map of the world.
Unlike many maps from the 1500s, this work was designed from a vantage point above the North Pole, placing the Arctic region at the center.
The map itself was created from 60 separate sheets that could be combined into a huge circular image almost 3 meters wide.
It features detailed drawings of ships, sea creatures, and distant lands, and reflects how Europeans viewed the world during the Age of Exploration.
Historians believe Monte became fascinated with global geography after a Japanese delegation visited Milan in the 1580s.
Today, the original map is stored at Stanford University’s David Rumsey Map Center, where it is digitally restored for public viewing online.
