“Not the good news, Bo broke a bone in his right ankle in the second and final game of overtime. He will have surgery on Tuesday of this week, which will keep him out for the rest of the season,” Payton said.
If the second-to-last play of the game was truly what Payton meant, then this would have been the play on which the Broncos took a knee before making the game-winning field goal. Just before the play, Nix threw a completion to Buffalo that resulted in a 30-yard pass interference call, which put the Broncos in field goal range.
On the play before that, Nix ran the keeper for a two-yard loss and was tackled by safety Cole Bishop. Nix was seen limping slightly after the game.

Nix was 26-of-46 for 279 yards and three touchdowns in the win, while also rushing for 29 yards on 12 carries.
“He’s a very strong, faith-based guy,” Payton said. “He’s sitting in the hallway with his family and he comes in here and we all talk to him. He knows God has a plan for him and he said he (broke his ankle) in high school and then he said he got one at Auburn.”
“And I said I wasn’t aware of it. If I had known, I wouldn’t have drafted you.”
Selected 12th overall out of Oregon in the 2024 NFL draft, Nix tied Russell Wilson’s NFL record with two dozen wins in his first two seasons. Saturday’s victory was his first in the playoffs. The Broncos lost at Buffalo last year, but Nix led Denver to the AFC’s first seed this season.
“He’s a tough cookie,” Payton said. “And this team has been missing key players all year and will rise to the next challenge.”
Payton said Broncos backup Jarrett Stidham will start at quarterback for Denver in next week’s AFC Championship game at Mile High Stadium against the winner of Sunday’s Patriots-Texans division game.
