Northern California city sees zero homicides in 2025, first time in nearly 40 years
(FOX40.COM) — Northern California law enforcement is celebrating a city without a homicide for the first time in nearly 40 years.

On Friday, the Modesto Police Department announced that Modesto will not experience a single homicide in 2025.

“This doesn’t happen by chance” said MPD Chief Brandon Gillespie. “This is happening because of the clear message we are sending together. Violent crime is not welcome here.”
Investments in technology such as expanded cameras, license plate readers and drones have contributed to the decline in homicides in Modesto, Gillespie said. He also paid tribute to concerned community members and officers at MPD.
“This is a new era for Modesto. This is not the same city as it was 10 or 15 years ago,” Gillespie said. “While zero homicides is certainly worth celebrating, we are committed to continuing this momentum into 2026 and beyond.”
