The National Rifle Association and other gun groups are suing California over the state’s ban on Glock-style guns having features known as switches that allow them to be converted into fully automatic weapons.

The NRA was joined by the Firearms Policy Coalition, the Second Amendment Foundation, Poway Guns and Equipment and two NRA members in challenging the state’s ban.

The lawsuit argues that California’s ban on Glock-style handguns violates the Second Amendment and is contrary to U.S. Supreme Court precedent.

“A law that prohibits the sale of a gun in common use and, accordingly, prevents citizens from acquiring it violates the Second Amendment,” the lawsuit states.

“Semi-automatic pistols with cruciform trigger bars are not constitutionally different from other types of semi-automatic pistols,” it continues.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, last week signed Assembly Bill 1127, which bans the sale or transfer of Glock and Glock-style handguns.

By law, licensed firearms dealers may not “sell, offer for sale, exchange, give, transfer, or deliver any semi-automatic machine gun convertible pistol”; it is defined as “any semi-automatic pistol with a cruciform trigger bar that can be easily converted by hand or with common household tools…can be converted to a machine gun by replacing or installing a pistol converter in place of the bolt backplate.” without any additional engineering, machining or modifications to the gun’s trigger mechanism.”

The law does not cover hammer-fired semi-automatic pistols and striker-fired semi-automatic pistols without a cruciform trigger bar. The law also does not apply to law enforcement.

The law is scheduled to come into force on July 1, 2026.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives reported a 570% increase in converted devices collected by law enforcement between 2017 and 2021, according to the Associated Press.

“You can make the switch to 3D printing, are you going to ban them too?” One gun owner who spoke to Fox 11 argued that the ban is just one step in an attempt to eventually outlaw all guns.
