The Pakistani kabaddi player sparked controversy when it was reported that he was playing for Team India in a private tournament in Bahrain. The incident triggered a backlash and raised questions about eligibility and representation rules.
In a surprising development, Ubeydullah Rajput, a well-known international kabaddi player from Pakistan, is currently facing scrutiny for his participation in a special tournament representing Team India in Bahrain on December 16. Pakistan Kabaddi Federation Secretary Rana Sarwar stated that Rajput may be subject to disciplinary measures.
The situation attracted attention with the emergence of images and videos. Ubeydullah It was widely circulated on social media, showcasing him in a T-shirt with India’s name on it and proudly waving the Indian flag during the Gulf Cooperation Council Cup.
Sarwar also stated that this issue will be taken up in an emergency meeting scheduled to be held on December 27, where a final decision will be taken regarding disciplinary action against Rajput and some other players.
“I can confirm that the competition organized by the organizers was a special event with special teams formed under the names of India, Pakistan, Canada, Iran etc. However, all the teams had players of their own origin. Indian players represented the Indian special team and Ubeydullah It is unacceptable for them to play in these conditions,” Sarwar said.
“Hence, action will also be taken against these players who are playing falsely under the name of Pakistan team.”
Who Ubeydullah Rajput?
Ubeydullah Rajput stands out as an experienced international defender who is appreciated for his remarkable agility and formidable strength on the kabaddi mat. A key player of the sport, he has proudly represented Pakistan in numerous prestigious international tournaments and is widely regarded as a cornerstone of the local kabaddi scene.
Beyond his national commitments, Rajput also enjoys immense popularity in private leagues and often showcases his skills at renowned clubs such as BRB Club. His career has been characterized by his prominent role as a “stopper” (defender) in the circle-style format of the game, which has earned him a significant fan base throughout the kabaddi community.
Expressing his sadness, Rajput revealed that he had received an invitation to attend the event in Bahrain, where he was part of a special team.
“But then I didn’t know that they named the side Indian team and I told the organizers not to use the names India and Pakistan.
“In private competitions in the past, Indian and Pakistani players have played together for a private team but never under the name of India or Pakistan.”
“I didn’t get that impression until later when I learned that I had been misrepresented as playing for the Indian team, which I can’t imagine doing after the clash.”
The PKF has called for an emergency General Council meeting on December 27 to determine the scope of penalties, which could range from significant fines to potential suspension from national and international competitions.
